Suffering is not just for those of us who buried our child

Today I am praying for a friend.  She is suffering.  She is grieving. Not over the loss of a child, but over the loss of dreams, her imagined life.  Her marriage has suffered a blow.  A blow that many marriages would not survive.  But I believe hers will survive!  I PRAY hers will survive!

I am amazed at how much of the truth I have thought about, studied, spoken aloud, and prayed since Andrew’s death applies to her situation as well:

  • God knew about this before it ever happened.
  • He had every one of her days written in His book before one of them came to be.
  • She must think about those things that are true and noble and right and pure and lovely and excellent and praiseworthy.
  • She must not listen to the father of lies, but must consider the Truth in Christ Jesus without thinking about what could have been or should have been.
  • She must rejoice in the Lord knowing that He is near and that He is a loving God.
  • She must walk in forgiveness and grace.
  • She must welcome and receive His mercy, love and compassion.
  • She must pray for wisdom, courage, and strength.
  • She needs us to pray for her, encourage her and love her.
  • Her family needs all these things as well.

I have seen so many over the past year go through trials of various kinds.  The truth of God’s Word is real and applicable to every type of suffering.  He is the hope and solution for each of us.

Once again, I find myself going to Philippians when wondering how to pray for my friend who is suffering…

And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ–to the glory and praise of God.

Philippians 1:9-11
