I just wonder…

I just wonder…

…do my church friends who post hateful things against those who live a homosexual lifestyle actually know anyone who is a homosexual? I mean…are they friends with…spend time with…take time to listen to…anyone who is homosexual?

I do. I have.

And I love them. They love me. My gay friends encourage me, love me, laugh with me and cry me. Just as my heterosexual friends do.

I do not agree with all the things my friends do. Some make choices that I don’t believe line up with God’s desires. But neither do I always make right choices. I do not always do the right thing. I am imperfect. I’m not even close to perfect.

Scripture says that we all fall short of the glory of God. In other words, we have all done wrong. We all sin.

We all need to change certain thought patterns and behaviors. At least I know I do. None of us is yet perfect.

Scripture also says that we can all experience forgiveness and grace. We can have a right relationship with The Father through Jesus Christ and by the power of the Holy Spirit. Forgiveness and grace are available to all who desire it, pursue it, and ask for it. All – not just those with whom I agree completely.

I will not stand in judgment of anyone. Judgement is for The Father.

There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you—who are you to judge your neighbor?

James 4:12 | NIV

The truth is…my friends are not gay or straight in my eyes. They are people. People whom I love. For whom I am grateful. For whom I pray. People I am glad to have in my life even if I disagree with some of their choices.

From a biblical perspective, I believe marriage is meant to be one man and one woman. I have studied much of the Old Testament and the New Testament. When discussing marriage, scripture always uses the terms “man” and “woman” or “husband” and “wife”.  It is clear to me that Bible speaks of one man-one woman marriage.

Yes, some in the Old Testament practiced polygamy…and slavery…and child sacrifice.  None of these practices were ever part of God’s best for us.

Please note: I do not expect those who don’t believe as I do to live by my standards.

I don’t want to get into a debate on gay marriage.

My point in this post is that a person’s lifestyle – gay or straight – does not determine whether or not I choose to be their friend. Their sex life is not my concern. If they are my neighbor, I will love them.

Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Matthew 22:37-40 | NIV
