Memory Work Monday : Responsible
I need to remember this every single day.
Responsibility
I am not responsible for:
- Anyone else’s happiness.
- Anyone else’s recovery.
- Anyone else’s behavior, choices, or mental health.
- Anyone else’s financial well-being, living conditions, or eating habits.
- Anyone else’s spiritual condition.
I AM responsible for:
- My happiness
- My recovery
- My behavior
- My choices
- My mental health
- My financial well-being
- My living conditions
- My eating habits
- My spiritual condition
I am responsible for how I treat others and for my reaction to how they treat me.
I am responsible for asking for help when I need it need.
In dealing with friends and family who are suffering due to their own choices,
Sometimes I just have to say over and over again:
- Not my monkey. Not my circus.
- Not my monkey. Not my circus.
- Not my monkey. Not my circus.
- Not my monkey. Not my circus.
- Not my monkey. Not my circus.
God,
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

If I had a penny for every time I say something like this to my clients, I’d have a lot of pennies 🙂

I need to remind myself often that I am no longer responsible for my adult offspring. As a mom, it is easy to pick up burdens that are not mine.
Not being responsible doesn’t mean I don’t care. I believe my job now is to pray. A lot. Often. Earnestly.
My favorite prayer for my adult family members is from Ephesians chapter one:
16 I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, 18 having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might 20 that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places,

I love that. Paul was a poet, and expressed his heart so clearly.
