I have read many arguments for and against letting refugees into our country. One I read today said that “all who flee are either cowards or terrorists trying to infiltrate the US.”
I know it is not exactly the same, (and I am not going to get into a political debate here), but…
Would you say that the millions of Jews who suffered and fled the Nazis were either cowards or part of the Nazis if they did not stay and fight rather than flee?
Are those who flee a forest fire or flood either cowards or part of the destruction if they don’t stand and fight it?
Is it really that black and white? They are ALL cowards or part of the terrorists?
There is a flood of evil overtaking the world. How are you standing to fight it?
I don’t know the solution. I don’t know all the answers.
But I do know the Answer. The Creator. The Alpha and Omega.
He said to love one another. His word tells me that there is no greater love than to lay down my life for a friend. He said to care for widows and orphans. He tells me to consider others more important than myself. He tells me to forgive others just as in Christ God forgave me. He says that our battle is not again flesh and blood.
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.
Ephesians 6:10-20 | NIV
I do not make decisions regarding refugees. I am not in leadership in my government. But I do have a job to do.
I am commanded to pray.
I can Pray for peace. Pray for our leaders to have wisdom and courage. Pray that God’s people are protected. Pray that innocent people would find healing and shelter.
Am I doing these things today? Am I loving those around me? I cannot solve the world’s problems, but I can be obedient to what I know to do today. Here. Now. In this place. With the people who surround me.
Today I am praying for each of you as Paul prayed:
And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God.
Philippians 1:9-11 | NIV
