Middle of the Night Texting

I’m not great at texting. But Saturday night I received a late night text that I had to answer.  A young woman reached out to me.  She is hurting. Her friend died. He went to sleep Sunday and never woke up. There has been no news regarding the cause of death. A seemingly healthy young man went to sleep and woke up in heaven.

you may not be awake… but I am like I have been all week. is it normal to be afraid to go to sleep? he went to sleep not knowing it was his last night and didn’t get to wake up. I’m afraid that I won’t get to say good bye….

Below is my answer. I wrote it quickly while still partially asleep. I am grateful for time spent not only ready the Bible but also memorizing it.

True love casts out all fear.

Do not be afraid, for I am with you. I will never leave you nor forsake you.

The reality is that we are afraid at times. It’s ok. It’s normal.

But when we are, we must take our thoughts captive and go to God. By prayer and asking Him we present our fears to Him. Don’t spend time imagining the worst.

You said you are afraid you won’t get to say goodbye. To whom?

Truth is that we will die. Some day. So live today like it matters. Love God. Love His children. Feed His sheep. Care for widows and orphans. Go into all the world making disciples of me. And teaching them to do all He taught us.

So that when you do die, be it today or sixty years from now, you will hear the Father say, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”

Sweet girl, you know that fear and worry are not from God. They will not make it better.

But right now you are grieving. You are scared and hurting.

You will feel pain. Fear. Anger. And many other emotions.

But in Christ you will also know peace.

His grace is sufficient for you. For in your weakness He is made strong.

You know truth. Do not listen to fears. Think about those things that are true and right and noble and pure and lovely and admirable.

You are loved with an everlasting love. You are a child of the King. He will care for you.

This may not help, but how horrible would it be to die? To live is Christ and to die is gain! If you died today you would be with Christ! (And you could give Mitchell and Andrew each a hug.)

This life is but a vapor. We were created for eternal life with God. For life in heaven.
It would be only a short time before those we love we join us in worship before the throne of God if they, too, know Christ.

But….

Until then you have good works to do which God prepared in advance for you to do. So do them well. Live each day for Christ. Share the love and truth of Jesus with those around you.

Be light shining in a dark and hurting world.

Love you, my sweet friend. And I am praying for you today.
