On our mantle are many stockings. Each stocking has a name embroidered on it. One each for Ron and me. One for each of our children and grandchildren. One for our son-in-law and one for our soon to be daughter-in-law. One for my brother and Gretchen who lived with us for a short while.
I hang each stocking every year, even for those who are absent this year...or forever.
I am grateful for these people, my family: Robert, Gretchen, Ron, Mark, Meredith, Lyz, David, Taryn, Adam, Andrew, Peter, Margaret, Read more [...]
We have many friends who lost a loved one over the past couple of years.
For many who've lost loved ones, the empty stocking hanging by the fire leads to more pain and tears.
Miscarriages and infant loss can be especially hard when you planned to have a new baby to cuddle and buy gifts for. The loss of a friend, sibling, or parent can cause us to feel like so much is missing during the holidays. Child loss brings a whole different kind of sorrow.
A few ideas for honoring your loved Read more [...]
I wrote the following in a grief group. I'm sharing it here because I know many of you are facing health issues, financial issues, family issues and other types of issues. Many of you dread the holidays.
May I add a different view?
Our son's birthday is Christmas Eve. He died along with four friends in a car wreck caused by a drunk driver in August 2013.
I look forward to the holidays, though he won't be here (this will be our 4th Christmas since his death) and neither will some of Read more [...]
I've spent the day sitting by the fire reading. I'm wearing my son's oversized sweater jacket and feel cozy. Loaded baked potato soup for lunch. Popcorn for snack. It's cold and rainy outside. May turn to snow tonight. The wind is howling but I'm safe and warm inside with my puppies and the love of my life. It's our thirty-third Christmas together
I have a wonderful life.

Andrew's birthday is Christmas Eve. He was a dancer. The last ballet I saw him in was Nutcracker in 2012. I bought a Snow King nutcracker that year since he was the Snow King.
The next year he was gone. One of our daughters suggested I collect nutcrackers in his memory. I said emphatically, "NO!" I did not want another nutcracker!
This is our third Christmas. I am ready. I bought three new nutcrackers this year and am proudly displaying them on the mantle.

My sweet friend gave me permission to share this. I love how she wants to honor God in her life. In her quest to honor Him, she is open to correction and leading by the Holy Spirit.
Many of us who grieve have reached a point where we knew we had to make a decision to persue healing and joy. I rejoice with Nanette that she is choosing joy.
Do you need an "Ah Ha" moment? Ask God to show you what you need to do this holiday season to honor Him.
So, I had one of those "ah ha" moments in church today. Read more [...]
Prayer helps me when I'm sad. I often pray for others when I'm hurting. This is my prayer today:
It's just a week before Christmas and so many of my friends are hurting. They are missing loved ones who are no longer living on earth.
Please, Lord, fill them with Your joy and peace. Remind them of Your love. Fill our hearts with sweet memories of Christmases past and hope for the future.
Help us all to remember what Christmas is all about: You love us so much that You gave Your Son that Read more [...]
“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will towards all men"
As Christmas Day approaches, may I remind you what it all about? In the words of Linus...

Three Day Quote Challenge: Day 3
Don’t ever wrestle with a pig. You'll both get dirty, but the pig will enjoy it.
― Cyrill Connolly
He went to the church, and walked about the streets, and watched the people hurrying to and for, and patted the children on the head, and questioned beggars, and looked down into the kitchens of homes, and up to the windows, and found that everything could yield him pleasure. He had never dreamed of any walk, that anything, could give him so much Read more [...]
